Back to the Trinity...!

Enjoyed TRWD Flyfest this past Saturday. Decided to go back to the Trinity River for another chance at the Bruisers that were stocked. Saw lots of folks catching them… unfortunately did not get one this round. Had some on the line, but could not close the deal and land them. Trout are much bigger than the normal stockers we have been seeing stocked this past season. No worries… got some great video of “how not to land them” and action shots of others getting the job done and catching them! Not sure how long the Trout will be in the river given warm temps ahead… regardless if you can make it there this week, your chance at getting one is more likely compared to the the following week!

Lessons Learned this round…

  • Don’t leave the landing net in the car, bring one!
  • When using spinning gear – a split-shot and Power Worm is good (see the video for a picture of the setup others were using)
  • When fly fishing, keep the rod tip high at the twelve o’clock while fighting a Bruiser
  • Also, use a San Juan Worm as a lead fishing fly and a trailing Nymph (Prince Nymph, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Zebra Midge) under an indicator and fish an upstream cast allowing the rig to drift into the run.
  • When using a Streamer, remove the indicator add split shot to get the fly deep where the fish are lurking.

PS: Thanks to the fisherman who provided the fly fishing tips… sound advice!
