Steady Action at Bethany!

Shifting our focus to warm water fishing. Start things off with Bethany Lakes yesterday for a quick trip. Wanted to see a Bass Fishing Fly we made would get the Bass to take. As it turned out, only had a few light strikes with it. Likely need to scale it down some as the Bass were wanting a small bait fish imitation.

In a festive move, decided to tie on the Mardis Gras Near Deere. Started get strikes and landing them soon after. Fishing fly worked well but ended up losing it to a sang, a tree, and a break off… think it was a nice one!

Luckily, the Bass were liking the Pink Near Deere, too. Managed more Bass and a nice Bluegill on the pink one. Fun stuff… Daylight Savings Time rocks!

Black Near Deere Variant

Here is a variant of the Near Deere tied using the same material as the Olive Near Deere but uses one black marabou plume and no chenille. Instead, the marabou plume is used in place of the chenille. We still prefer using chenille when tying a Near Deere, but in making do with what we have, this approach allows us to skip a trip to Cabelas just for one item – black chenille. Frito Fishing Flies for the Sabiki Rig

Still tinkering with the Sabiki Rig for White Bass. Planned to go fishing after work today. But, ran out of Crappie Jigs. Did see a YouTube video on making fishing flies for a Sabiki Rig using packaging from a coffee bag. Did not have a coffee bag but did have a “just finished” Frito bag. Made four Frito Fishing Flies and fished them on a Sabiki Rig at Tickey Creek. Caught a number of White Bass including one Keeper size one finally. But, as luck would have it, snapped the fishing line and lost the whole rig. Oh well, going to make more and plan to use them for more White Bass fishing with a Sabiki Rig. DFW Fishing | How I Fished the Super Duper at Bethany Lakes

Fishing updates and related activities from the Team! This round caught three trout… two on a Gold Super Duper and one on a Silver Super Duper on a Friday morning quick trip. Did go back Saturday and caught three more on the Gold Super Duper. But, no video. Back Sunday morning and finally limited out using a Black Roostertail. Video in the works stay tuned. DFW Fishing | Bethany Lakes Trout Stocking

Texas Trout Stocking Season is in full swing. Our local pond received its stocking Thursday, 12/19. Yours truly made a quick trip after work to the pond and noted lots of folks catching trout. Trout were active, and bait seemed to be the key. I opted for lures and managed to catch two trout – one on a Gold Super Duper and another on a PowerBait Worm (it’s a lure isn’t it?). Fun times, even cooked up the two using a simple recipe of Garlic Powder, Season Salt, and Jalapenos! Made it back this morning and caught three on Super Dupers. Will get that video posted at a later date. Fun times!

Fun with Yellow Bass!

Had a fun time jug lining at Tickey Creek Saturday. While catching Shad with the cast net, soon found out that the Yellow Bass are back! This time of year Yellow Bass tend to points and other wind blown areas where Shad are present. But, we especially like when they start to show near boat ramps… quick trips on light tackle and less things to snag and break off! Decided to make a quick trip Sunday back to Tickey Creek. Brought ultralight gear and nightcrawlers.

Blue River Oklahoma | Fishing the Catch and Release Section!

Fished the Blue River in Oklahoma last Saturday – November 7. Plan was to fish the Hughes Crossing area for trout to make another catch and cook. Struck out though. That said, made the run North of HWY 7 and fished the Catch and Release Section. After a wrong turn or two, made it to the area and had a fun time catching, losing, and landing a trout or two. Did see an armadillo on the walk back to the parking area, and stopped by the Fly Library to add a fishing fly or two to collection. Overall, a great time on the Blue River! How We Fished the John Deere... The Simple Fishing Fly Pattern!

The John Deere is a simple fishing fly pattern that uses chenille, a jig fly hook, and a marabou plume. The hook size is small – size 10 thru 14, and the plume can be cut to different lengths to match the “bite”. Moreover, the John Deer Tractor color scheme of green and yellow is suggested. But, we have caught Trout using unpainted jig fly hooks. For more details on how to tie a John Deere, see the video below. We first fished the John Deere one weekend trout fishing on the Blue River in Oklahoma! Recent rains made it tough Saturday with trout caught mainly using bait. We tried various fishing flies, Power Worms, Mouse Tails, and even Salmon Eggs, but it was a strike out. DIY Fish Bait Recipe | Fishing with Pectin aka Gelatin #shorts

YouTube Shorts video where I use Pectin – also can use Gelatin, to make DIY Fish Bites using a recipe from  @Deep Waters Fishing  – see video at https://youtu.be/GQm-EOpLSsg , for saltwater fishing. We call it DIY Fish Bites Gummy Gums for ease of reference. It is a simple recipe that works in freshwater, too! Steps are: 1. Pour one shot of Bass Attractant into a measuring cup. You can use Trout Attractant or other “flavorings” as well. 2. Add water to make a combined mix of 1/4 cup of water and attractant. Make sure to not go over the 1/4 cup combined mix. 3. Add 3 Tablespoons of Pectin or unflavored Gelatin. You can let sit for a 3 – 5 minutes to let the pectin/gelatin bloom if desired. Else, go to step 4. 4. Then, heat in a saucepan until syrupy. Can also try microwaving in 30 second to 1 minute intervals, checking for consistency…. aka “syrupiness”. 5. Next, pour into a mold or container, and let cool in the fridge. How Do We Clean and Cook Trout?

Question from one of our Readers asking, “How do we clean and cook trout?” In answer to the question, we provide a summary of the different ways we clean and cook trout! Depending on the size of the trout, we clean and cook them as follows: Stocker size trout (9″-13″ in size) : We cut their heads or remove the gills (“gilling”), and then we remove the guts. Not sure why we opt to cut the head off versus “gilling” them; just seems to go one way or the other from trip to trip. When cooking the Stockers, we season them with salt and pepper (sometimes add Season Salt), and then pan fry them in oil for about 5-8 minutes each side. For larger trout in the 14″ – 18″ range: We clean them like the Stockers but will split the fish (butterfly). We then cook them on a cedar plank (see Grilled Plank Trout Recipe ). For trout going 19″+ in size: We gill them and remove the guts, leaving the head in place. Then, we stuff with lemon slices, onions, butter, and sprinkle Rosemary in the body cavity. Nex
